Arsenal Military Academy

About this drama

During the Republican era, a courageous young woman joins an elite military academy by assuming her late brother's identity. As she navigates the school's brutal training while hiding her secret, she forms deep bonds with a playful rich heir and a disciplined soldier. Together, the students must transition from rivals into comrades to protect their nation from escalating foreign aggression.

Who this is for

A blast for fans of Republican-era academy settings, cross-dressing heroines, and chaotic bickering roommates. The main attraction is Xu Kai's flamboyant, peacocking playboy falling head-over-heels for Bai Lu's disguised cadet. Skip it if you're sensitive to wartime gun violence and sudden character deaths, or if you expect a romance-first plot—espionage missions and anti-imperialist resistance drive most of the 48 episodes.

Our take

Arsenal Military Academy owes its staying power almost entirely to the combustible chemistry between Bai Lu and Xu Kai. Xu Kai's Gu Yanzhen is one of Republican C-drama's standout comic leads—an arrogant, jealous brat whose gradual maturation into a self-sacrificing protector feels genuinely earned. The series' sharpest flaw is its erratic tonal whiplash: it swings abruptly from laugh-out-loud dormitory pranks to grim firing squads and wartime slaughter. Physical intimacy between the leads was clearly left on the cutting room floor, but for swagger, banter, and memorable cadet camaraderie, it remains a top-tier watch.

Pacing & content notes

The opening episodes establish the academy training and cadet rivalries at a steady clip. Episodes 22–26 hit a noticeable lull when Gu Yanzhen is sidelined in Beijing. The couple's dynamic only locks in around episode 34, before the action accelerates into a high-stakes, fatal final arc.
