About this drama
After being betrayed and dismembered by his lover on their wedding day, the dragon king Tian Yao survives as a weakened soul. Years later, he encounters Yan Hui, a cultivation disciple who unknowingly carries his protective heart scale. He initially manipulates her to help retrieve his sealed body parts, but their forced partnership evolves into a deep bond as they confront the past and hidden conspiracies.
Who this is for
Good for xianxia fans who want a talkative, funny heroine and a bickering-to-devoted couple that actually communicates more than most genre leads. Skip it if low-budget CGI and dubbing bother you, or if you want a tight plot that stays as fun in its second half as in its first.
Our take
Most viewers come away fond of the lead pair, with Zhou Ye's lively, outspoken Yan Hui the most praised element and Neo Hou's restrained dragon king dividing opinion between quietly effective and too stiff. The early adventure stretch is consistently called charming and genuinely funny, with Riley Wang's shadow demon and the side couples adding a lot of warmth. The common complaint is that the story changes direction mid-run, adding a love triangle, extra characters and flashbacks that slow it down, and that emotional scenes often get undercut by gags. Effects, sets and dubbing look modest next to bigger-budget xianxia, and the finale splits viewers between satisfied and wanting more closure.
Pacing & content notes
Reviewers widely agree the first 16-17 episodes are the strongest; a plot turn around episodes 16-18 brings in a love triangle and many side characters, and several viewers found episodes 18-35 slow and filler-heavy before the final stretch picks up.
Heads up
