About this drama
After returning to her hometown, psychology PhD student Lin Wanxing unexpectedly takes a job managing high school sports equipment. She is soon tasked with reviving the school's disbanded soccer team and finds an unlikely partner in her mysterious tenant, a former elite coach. Together, they guide a group of underdog students through personal and athletic challenges, healing their own past traumas while pursuing professional and emotional success.
Who this is for
A rewarding watch for viewers who enjoy grounded sports underdog stories and quiet emotional healing over high-fluff idol romance. It features Esther Yu in a noticeably restrained, mature role alongside Chen Jingke's guarded mentor. Skip it if you need high-octane couple drama or rapid romantic skinship—the romance develops organically alongside the teenagers' personal struggles.
Our take
Road to Success sets itself apart by rejecting formulaic idol tropes in favor of an earnest coming-of-age sports drama. Esther Yu subverts her usual bubbly persona to deliver a thoughtful, understated performance as a disgraced academic, while Chen Jingke brings quiet warmth to a coach wrestling with debilitating remorse. The high school soccer journey feels earned rather than miraculous, treating student mental health and family poverty with genuine empathy. While the early episodes take time to establish the local campus ensemble, the series builds toward an uplifting, deeply satisfying conclusion that celebrates mutual dreams and patient love.
Pacing & content notes
