About this drama

After a long marriage of political convenience ends in mutual suspicion and death, Princess Li Rong and Prime Minister Pei Wenxuan are returned to their youth—Li Rong at eighteen and Pei Wenxuan at twenty. Retaining memories of their previous lives, the two former enemies must navigate treacherous palace intrigues and court politics. While initially seeking to avoid their past mistakes, they eventually choose to work together to uncover conspiracies, leading to a complex journey of rediscovery and genuine romance.

Who this is for

Viewers who enjoy rebirth stories, a bickering already-married couple who actually talk through their problems, and plenty of court and succession politics. Skip it if you want the romance front and centre all the way through, or if a second male lead who takes over large stretches of screen time will frustrate you.

Our take

The hook is that both halves of a failed political marriage—the Princess Royal and her consort—are reborn with their memories, and the pair talk through old grievances instead of scheming against each other. Zhang Linghe's devoted, shrewd Pei Wenxuan is the most praised element, while Zhao Jinmai is credited with conveying an older soul in a young face despite some criticism of her regal presence. The biggest and most consistent complaint is the second male lead Su Rongqing, whose screen time and sympathetic framing grow through the second half and dominate the finale. Convoluted succession politics and uneven pacing leave audiences sharply divided between loving the central pair and resenting the second-lead detour.

Pacing & content notes

The early episodes are brisk and the couple's core misunderstanding is cleared around episode 11; reviewers say the second half and especially the last quarter shift toward palace politics and the second male lead, which many found bloated, and the finale is widely called rushed for the leads.

Heads up

  • Second male lead gets very heavy screen time, including much of the final episode
  • Female lead treats the male lead harshly in the first couple of episodes
  • Assassinations, a caning and a castration in the political plot
  • One forced-kiss scene that viewers found off-putting
  • Adaptation changes upset some readers of the novel

Ending

The leads end together, but much of the final episode goes to the second male lead, so their own ending feels short (a bonus special episode followed).
