About this drama
In middle school, Sang Zhi develops a secret, one-sided crush on Duan Jiaxu, her older brother's charming college roommate who steps in as a protective surrogate brother. After years of separation and misunderstanding, Sang Zhi enters university in his city. Reunited as adults, their dynamic slowly shifts as she uncovers the heavy family debts and emotional baggage he carries, turning childhood admiration into an earnest, reciprocal romance.
Who this is for
Built for romance purists who want pure sugar, lively sibling banter, and a protective male lead without toxic games. Give it a pass if the premise of a teenager crushing on an older college student makes you uncomfortable, or if you need high external conflict to stay engaged.
Our take
Hidden Love became an international hit because it executes the secret-crush trope with exceptional warmth, anchored by natural chemistry between Zhao Lusi and Chen Zheyuan and hilarious sibling sparring with Victor Ma. The production is glossy and cozy, keeping relationship angst minimal and family ties supportive. The sticking point is the opening third: the age gap feels awkward while Sang Zhi is portrayed as very young, even though the narrative carefully defers any romance until her college years. Once the adult reunion clicks in episode 8, it settles into an unabashedly sweet comfort watch.
Pacing & content notes
Slow start across episodes 1–8 covering school years and timeskips where the leads are mostly apart. The relationship shifts into focus between episodes 9–14, becomes official around 15–18, and the later adult stretch moves at an easy, slice-of-life clip.
Heads up
- Age gap dynamic: the first 8 episodes depict the heroine at 14 while the hero is in college (romance only begins once she is an adult)
- Slow opening stretch
- Persistent unwanted admirer / stalker subplot
- Parental illness and hospital grief in late episodes
