When I Fly Towards You

About this drama

In autumn 2012, cheerful and irrepressible high school student Su Zaizai falls for Zhang Lurang, a reserved academic standout wrestling with deep-seated maternal pressures and self-doubt. Rather than holding back, Zaizai charges ahead with candid warmth, slowly dismantling Lurang's emotional armor. Backed by a close-knit quintet of classmates, their bond matures through high school cram sessions, college milestones, and early adulthood in a low-angst celebration of mutual growth.

Who this is for

An absolute comfort watch for anyone who loves low-angst youth romances with believable ensemble friendships. It captures early-2010s school nostalgia without toxic tropes, manipulative triangles, or manufactured breakups. Skip it if you need high stakes, villainous melodrama, or want the post-high-school years to receive equal screen time.

Our take

When I Fly Towards You succeeds because it commits wholeheartedly to warm, unpretentious youth nostalgia. Zhang Miaoyi's sunny Su Zaizai never feels cloying, and Zhou Yiran's quiet performance avoids the aloof jerk cliché, making his character's gradual thaw feel earned. The camcorder video-diary snippets ending each episode add a tactile, personal charm that elevates the familiar formula. The narrative balance is front-loaded: the school years occupy nearly the entire run, leaving college and adult life to unfold in a rapid montage. For pure low-conflict sweetness, it ranks among the best modern C-drama school stories.

Pacing & content notes

Half-hour episodes and quick mini-arcs keep the tempo breezy. Most of the run is firmly rooted in high school; adulthood is compressed into a fast highlight reel across the final four episodes.
