So Funny Youth

About this drama

Five childhood friends living on Junma Road navigate the bittersweet challenges of high school and adolescence together. The group, featuring the stubborn Zhang Xiaoran and academic prodigy Zhu Chenghai, experiences the joys and stumbles of youth while supporting one another through school life and budding romances. Set in 2006, this nostalgic story follows their collective transition into adulthood as they learn hard truths and discover their individual paths.

Who this is for

A charming slice-of-life pick for fans of nostalgic neighborhood comedies like Lovely Us and Reply 1988. The main joy is the messy, laugh-out-loud camaraderie of five childhood friends growing up together in 2006. Skip it if you need fast romantic sparks or dramatic plot hooks—the romance is an unhurried, slow-blooming subplot.

Our take

So Funny Youth punches above its indie budget thanks to natural, unforced chemistry among its young cast and an authentic recreation of mid-2000s small-town student life. He Yu displays effortless comic timing as the brash boy next door, and the ensemble captures the mundane absurdities of adolescence with genuine warmth. The trade-off is an extremely delayed romantic payoff: the mutual feelings are kept in the subtext until the university departure, leaving little time to explore them as a couple. For warm nostalgia and laugh-out-loud group banter, however, it remains one of C-drama's most pleasant hidden gems.

Pacing & content notes

Breezy 35-minute episodes make for an effortless watch. The high school banter flows easily, though the romantic feelings remain unacknowledged for most of the run before a fast resolution in the finale.
